One in five women experiences a perinatal mood and anxiety disorder (PMAD) during the first year postpartum, with PMADs being the most common complication of pregnancy, affecting nearly 20 percent of individuals during pregnancy and the postpartum year.  Despite its prevalence, perinatal mental health concerns remain under-screened and under-diagnosed, posing a significant challenge for pregnant and postpartum individuals.  This presentation aims to shed light on evidence-based screening tools, counseling techniques, and support methods related to perinatal mental health.  Additionally, it will explore strategies for seamlessly integrating perinatal mental health support into care for pregnant and postpartum families, along with a comprehensive review of psychopharmacology for common psychiatric disorders in the perinatal period.

Learning Objectives

  • Increased awareness of the prevalence and significance of PMADs.
  • Knowledge of evidence-based screening tools and counseling techniques.
  • Practical strategies for integrating perinatal mental health support into care practices.
  • Understanding the role of psychopharmacology in managing psychiatric disorders during the perinatal period.
